The Different Types Of Nurses

There are many different types of nurses, each with their own set of roles and responsibilities. Here is a brief overview of some of the most common types of nurses:

  • Registered Nurses (RNs): RNs are the most common type of nurse. They provide direct patient care, coordinate care plans, and may also supervise other nurses and support staff.
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs): LPNs provide basic nursing care under the supervision of an RN or physician. They may also perform some administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and ordering supplies.
  • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs): CNAs provide basic patient care, such as bathing, dressing, and eating. They also help with moving patients around in bed and transferring them to wheelchairs or stretchers.
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs): APRNs are registered nurses who have completed advanced education and training in a specialty area, such as pediatrics or geriatrics. They may provide direct patient care, conduct research, or teach other nurses.

The Various Levels Of Nursing Education

There are many levels of nursing education, each with its own set of requirements. The first level of training needed is for CNAs. This certification can generally be done in a couple of months, and is the lowest level of education needed. 

Likely the most common level of nursing education is the registered nurse (RN) level. To become an RN, you must complete an accredited nursing program and pass the NCLEX-RN exam. These programs are often 2-4 years, although some can be done in as little as one year.  

The next level of nursing education is the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) level. To become an APRN, you must complete an accredited nursing program and pass a national certification exam. APRNs can specialize in a variety of areas, such as primary care, pediatrics, women’s health, and mental health. Generally, APRNs have a masters degree. 

The highest level of nursing education is the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) level. To earn a DNP, you must complete a doctoral program in nursing and pass a national certification exam. DNPs can specialize in a variety of areas, such as primary care, pediatrics, women’s health, and mental health.

How Much School Is Necessary To Become A Nurse

There are a few different educational paths you can take to become a nurse. You can earn a certificate, diploma, or degree from an accredited nursing program. You can also become a registered nurse (RN) by completing an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

If you want to become an RN, you will need to complete an accredited nursing program and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). To be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN, you must have graduated from an accredited nursing program.

The length of time it takes to become a nurse depends on the type of program you choose. A certificate or diploma program can take as little as one year to complete, while an ADN or BSN degree may take two to four years.
